France drags Apple and Google to court

"All that is unacceptable and it's not the economy that we want".

"I will have Google and Apple taken to the Commercial Court of Paris for abusive trade practices, because I believe that Google and Apple, no matter how powerful they are, can not treat our start-ups and our developers the way they are doing today".

Apple and Google face legal action at the Paris commercial court that could result in a fine of Euro 2 million for unfair commercial practices.

The French government is taking both Google and Apple to court, accusing the companies of "abusive trade practices" in the way that they treat developers.

Google said its terms comply with French laws and it intends to make that case in court, according to an e-mailed statement by a representative for the company in France.

In the past few years, France maintained a schizophrenic relationship with American tech giants, both wooing them to build more operations in the country but also pursuing litigation and performing office raids against them for alleged consumer fraud abuses and tax evasion.

Mr Le Maire said the fines could be in the "million of euros".

In 2013, French authorities raided Apple's stores and distributors in France in a probe into the Cupertino tech giant's resale practices.

The likes of Google, Amazon and Facebook meanwhile have consistently praised France for its talent pool of engineers and researchers over the past years.

Le Maire speaking on RTL radio stated that the practices performed by Apple and Google have been recently noticed by him. The findings of a similar investigation into Amazon are being reviewed by a tribunal.
