Federer books rematch with Korean giant killer Chung

Roger Federer is just one win away from retaining his world number one status after progressing to the quarter-finals at the BNP Paribas Open with a straight sets win over Jeremy Chardy on Wednesday.

The Swiss 20-time grand slam champion - a five-time victor at Indian Wells, including previous year - only lost five points on serve. "He hits it big, has a big serve, big forehand", said Federer, a five-time champion at Indian Wells.

The No 1 seed beat the Frenchman 7-5, 6-4, the closeness of the scoreline flattering Chardy as Federer dominated on serve and was clinical with the break points.

Federer again took the only break in the second set to go up 5-4.

A quarter-final match-up against South Korea's Hyeon Chung stands in Federer's way of matching his record. "I have few match points but start [getting] windy and he playing good". I have a lot of respect for him as a player, and I think he's going to be, yeah, very successful'.

Indeed, the world No. 26 took the Serb out at Melbourne Park, before blisters ended his hopes of competing against Federer in the last-four, but he will get another shot at the 20-time major victor in California.

"(Federer is) playing really good this year so far, as well, so I don't know", Chung said.

The 21-year-old Chung won 11 of the first 12 games crushing Pablo Cuevas, 6-1, 6-3, advancing to his first career Masters 1000 at the BNP Paribas Open. He dropped just three serve points overall with those coming on his second serve.

Both met in January at the semi-finals of Australian Open.

"I am surprised he came back so soon".

Anderson will face Croatia's Borna Coric in the quarter-finals after Coric edged unseeded American Taylor Fritz 2-6, 7-6 (8-6), 4-6.

The German will play Juan Martin del Potro after he defeated fellow Argentine Leonardo Mayer in three sets. "So I'm just happy I'm on a good run", the 20-time Grand Slam victor added.

Next up for the Argentine is Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber, who advanced with a 6-4 7-6 (1) win over France's Pierre-Hugues Herbert.
