"President Trump has called on the Congress and our European allies to enact real and lasting restraints on Iran's nuclear and ballistic missile ambitions".

"Though these measures constitute a significant change in our sanctions posture, comprehensive non-nuclear-related sanctions with respect to Iran remain in place", President Trump insisted.

It is unclear how Mike Pompeo becoming USA secretary of state may affect the Iran nuclear deal.

Israeli officials said that they believe Trump is serious in his threat to withdraw from the deal by mid- May unless these three European governments - the "E3" - demonstrate their willingness to renegotiate on these points.

"The United States, Iran, Hezbollah and Russian Federation are all combating ISIS".

Former U.S. officials suggested that, as the administration nears a planned summit meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un about Pyongyang's nuclear program, it could rethink its stance on the Iran deal. In his 2016 presidential campaign, Trump railed against the agreement as the "worst deal ever", saying Iran had won relief from sanctions without having to give up enough in return.

Earlier that month, Trump announced he would waive the sanctions on Iran as required by the nuclear agreement but for the last time. But analysts said European banks and other firms are already reluctant to do business in Iran due to the threat of a possible "snap-back" of US sanctions and don't want to lose their access to the vast American market.

"The North Koreans will wonder about whether one can have credible negotiations with the United States", said a former senior US official.

Army General Joseph Votel, commander of the U.S. Central Command, testifies before the Senate Armed Services Committee on Capitol Hill in Washington, March 13, 2018. The US president also threatened to withdraw the US from the agreement if it is not amended.

His comments centered on the deal addressing USA and worldwide concerns about Iran having a nuclear weapons program.
