Iran invites Pak China to join Chabahar project

Following the recent escalation in incidents of such nature, sources said the Pakistani diplomats, their children and families were finding it hard to stay in New Delhi due to the intimidating behaviour of the Indian authorities.

Minister for Defence Khurram Dastgir has strongly condemned harassment and intimidation of Delhi-based Pakistani diplomats and their families.

Last month, there were intrusions into the Indian diplomatic residential complex under construction in Islamabad. In a note verbale, Pakistan high commission alleged that the vehicle of one of the senior diplomats with his children on board was blocked on road.

This deliberate bullying was not confined to a single isolated event, but continued unabated in a series of incidents, especially targeting the children of officers and staff, it added. A man allegedly then took the diplomat's photographs. On the same day, Counselor Political was forcibly evicted from a cab and harassed by unknown persons, who used abusive language, threatened him and filmed the whole incident with impunity.

Islamabad emphasised that under the Vienna Convention, the safety and the security of Pakistani diplomats and their families were the responsibility of New Delhi, said an official release from the Pakistan foreign office, copies of which were also made available to the Indian media.

India, however, said that its diplomats posted to Islamabad have been facing similar harassment. These have escalated exponentially in the last few days.

In one of the latest incidents, a auto of Pakistani high commission official was intercepted by another vehicle followed by the humiliation of his pictures being taken in front of general public.

Aggressive surveillance, violation of physical space and tailing of officers in close and risky proximity has been a perennial problem, the first person cited above said. "Obscene phone calls and messages are constantly received on phones", sources said, narrating the experiences of many Indian diplomats.

The South Asian neighbours, which have fought three wars since gaining independence from the British in 1947, regularly trade tit-for-tat allegations of harassment and espionage against diplomats.

On the other hand, government sources told The Indian Express that Indian officials in Islamabad are being subjected to increased hostility, harassment and intimidation.

Relations between Pakistan and India have historically been tense, and the tensions aggravated under the BJP government.

The two countries regularly exchange fire across the de facto border in the disputed northern region of Kashmir, which both claim in full but administer separate portions of.
