Bolasie did well to get behind the Albion defence and connect with a looping header that dropped narrowly off target, with Ryan's goal living a somewhat charmed life.

Albion had wins over West Ham and Swansea, scoring seven goals in those victories, in between earning a point away from home against Stoke. Bolasie had spent the afternoon searching in vain for an end product, yet after an hour of trying he cut in from the left and floated a delightful cross to the far post, where Theo Walcott popped up beside Gaëtan Bong to pressure the defender into an own goal.

Cenk Tosun joined Everton in the summer of 2017.

Both of those games came away from home, with the Toffees ranking as the third worst side in the division on the road.

Rooney was gifted the opportunity to put the icing on the cake from the spot after Dominic Calvert-Lewin was adjudged to have been fouled in the penalty area.

Everton have lost only one of their 10 previous league meetings with Brighton (W5 D4).

For perhaps the first time all season, an Everton manager selected what is arguably the first choice back four and first choice front four.

Brighton are unbeaten in five Premier League games (W3 D2) and have won back-to- back games in the competition for the first time, though both of those have been at home.

Anthony Knockaert's red card was the first Brighton have received in the Premier League and their first in league football since Lewis Dunk's against Huddersfield in February 2017.

Instead of Schneiderlin, Allardyce took the decision to use Wayne Rooney as his holding midfielder and this perhaps more than anything shows that he hasn't given up, that he's willing to find radical solutions in an attempt to improve Everton's position. "I can only put it down to the effect of playing really good sides every week".
