Other major US stock indexes also rebounded Tuesday, with the S&P 500 finishing up 46 points, or 1.7 percent, and the Nasdaq up 148 points, or 2.1 percent. After numerous turns higher and lower, it wound up with a gain, coincidentally, of 567. Health care, technology and industrial companies took outsize losses and energy companies sank with oil prices.

Bond yields reversed after a sharp drop Monday. European markets raced higher, while stocks in Asia were mixed. When bond yields rise, those stocks become less appealing to investors seeking income. The Nasdaq has lost 9.7 percent of its value in the same span, falling short of the 10 percent threshold that defines a stock correction.

He said Wall Street is now at the same level from November 2017 and insists it is not a bear market, nor is it technically counted as a correction - which is usually measured as a 10 percent fall from the high.

During Monday's roller-coaster trading on Wall Street, at its lowest ebb, the Dow was down 1,597 points from Friday's close. On Tuesday, the blue-chip average swung almost 1,200 points from its low to its high before finishing up 567 points, or 2.3%. Brent crude gave up 70 cents, or 1.1 percent, to $64.81 per barrel.

It's worth noting that these are point drops and not percentage drops. The VIX's bond-market cousin reached its highest since April.

Big drops Friday and Monday erased the Dow's gains for the year. Stocks in Taiwan were nearly unchanged and Southeast Asian markets were mixed.

"People will be afraid now of shorting volatility".

New York Federal Reserve President Bill Dudley told Bloomberg News on Thursday that if the USA economy keeps getting stronger the central bank may be justified in raising rates four times this year.

Schutte, of Northwestern Mutual, added that corrections can end quickly, and they often do so when investors see evidence of continued economic growth. The move sent markets tumbling.

The Dow was up 264 points, or 1.1 percent, at 24,122.

Australia's S&P/ASX 200 was up 1.0 percent at 5,889.60. Germany's DAX was down 1.9 per cent at 12,445.

"Investors need to get ready for normal levels of volatility". Japan's Nikkei 225 fell 4.73 percent Tuesday and China's Shanghai SE Composite Index was down 3.35 percent. South Korea's Kospi gained 0.5 percent and the Hang Seng of Hong Kong rose 0.4 percent. Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen noted in her final meeting that inflation was beginning to rise, announcing that average hourly earnings rose 2.9% in January.

The dollar fell to 109.33 yen from 109.70 yen. The euro fell to $1.2280 from $1.2392.

The Dow recovered some of its early plunge and was down 127 points, or 0.4 percent, at 24,255.

In currency markets, the Canadian dollar closed at an average trading value of 79.46 cents United States, down 0.25 of a USA cent.
