Waymo settles dispute with Uber

Both Uber and Waymo have issued statements on Friday confirming the settlement, which has concluded an ongoing trial between the two companies and years of contest.

Waymo filed a lawsuit almost a year ago accusing Uber of conspiring with Levandowski to create a fake company that would be purchased by Uber and used to steal eight trade secrets from Google's self-driving auto team.

Uber has finally reached a settlement with Google's company Waymo after the latter claimed that Uber stole self-driving technology ideas from it.

Reuters provides more: "The settlement allows Uber's chief executive officer, Dara Khosrowshahi, to put another scandal behind the company and move ahead with development of self-driving technology, following the tumultuous leadership by former CEO Travis Kalanick, who testified at the trial on Tuesday and Wednesday".

Uber agreed to pay equity valued at about $245 million to Waymo, according to a Waymo representative.

In settlement talks previous year, Waymo had sought at least $1 billion from Uber, and wanted an independent monitor to ensure that Uber would not use Waymo technology in the future, Reuters reported. Uber rejected those terms as non-starters.

The resulting compromise cut Uber's payment in half, but provided Waymo with the guarantees that it wanted to prevent its technology from being used in Uber's autonomous cars.

Not long after Thursday's trial proceedings ended, the top lawyers from both companies, Uber's Tony West and Waymo's Kevin Vosen, met to hammer out an agreement.

"While I cannot erase the past, I can commit, on behalf of every Uber employee, that we will learn from it, and it will inform our actions going forward", Khosrowshahi wrote.

Lidar is a light-based sensor crucial to autonomous driving.

"As Uber's statement indicates, no trade secrets ever came to Uber", the statement said. Through that lens, the acquisition of Otto made good business sense.

"Their risks would have gone up on many levels", Ms. Rowe said. The US Department of Justice opened a criminal probe at the prodding of Alsup, although it has not publicly identified the targets of that investigation. Levandowski was not a defendant in the case.

The Waymo lawsuit was the most pressing legal battle for Uber, but only one item in a long list of controversies that has dogged the company for the past year. Uber has plans to sell stock to the public sometime next year.

"I've told Alphabet that the incredible people at Uber ATG are focused on ensuring that our development represents the very best of Uber's innovation and experience in self-driving technology".

Uber now has small pilots in Tempe, Arizona, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Uber bought Levandowski's start-up, Otto, for $680 million in 2016.

Stock in the privately held Uber would be transferred immediately to Alphabet, which was an early Uber investor and remains as one of its largest shareholders.

The chauffeur-driven vehicle reservation service also expressed its "regrets" and pledged to use only its own technologies in the development of its autonomous auto, seen as the grail of public transport of the future and likely to generate Billions of dollars in revenue. Uber has claimed its own technology was significantly different.

After spending almost a week in the courtroom, Waymo and Uber came to an agreement on Friday, Feb. 9, in which the latter will pay the Google/Alphabet division a significant sum of money (in our view - perhaps not in Google's).
