Two Turkish troops killed as helicopter downed

Nine Turkish soldiers were killed and eleven others were injured in cross-border operation in Syria's Afrin on Saturday, Turkish military said in a statement.

Since the beginning of Operation Olive Branch, 1,266 terrorists were killed in Syria's Afrin district, the Turkish General Staff said in a message February 11.

The first to break the news was Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Erdogan's remarks came at a ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party's provincial meeting in Istanbul.

A spokesman for the Kurdish militia, Mustafa Bali, said his fighters downed the chopper in Raju, northwest Afrin.

At least two Turkish troops were killed on Saturday as a military helicopter was shot down in the mountainous border region between Turkey and Syria, prompting the country's president to promise that those responsible will pay a "heavy price".

The Turkish Armed Forces also confirmed the incident and the deaths, saying that the helicopter had "crashed".

"We don't have exact evidence or document to determine that it went down with any outside interference", Binali Yildirim told reporters in the western province of Mugla.

Accounts associated with the Azerbaijani lobby in Turkey distributed photos, apparently taken in the war zone, showing messages written on shells like "Karabakh is Turkish, will remain Turkish" with a hashtag for the Turkish official name for the Afrin operation, "Olive Branch".

"These things will happen; we are in a war".

Turkey began airstrikes against Syrian-Kurdish YPG militia in Afrin last month and later launched a ground operation. It said two soldiers on board died and technical crews were investigating the crash.
