Trump won't release Democratic memo, sends back to committee

President Donald Trump on Saturday tweeted a brief explanation for why he rejected the request to declassify a Democratic memo from the House Intelligence Committee.

President Trump will not declassify the memo from Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee as it now is written, the White House announced in a letter Friday night.

"The Democrats sent a very political and long response memo which they knew, because of sources and methods (and more), would have to be heavily redacted, whereupon they would blame the White House for lack of transparency", Trump wrote in a tweet yesterday.

He says the president would consider releasing it if the House Intelligence Committee revises the memo to mitigate the risks.

Democrats called the Nunes memo biased and misleading and said it comprised cherry-picked information from the documentation of one part of the investigation into Russia's role in the 2016 US presidential election.

In a letter to the committee, White House counsel Donald McGahn said, "although the President is inclined to declassify the February 5th Memorandum, because the Memorandum contains numerous properly classified and especially sensitive passages, he is unable to do so at this time".

The White House says the Justice Department had identified portions of the memo that "would create especially significant concerns for the national security and law enforcement interests" of the country.

The head of the House committee, Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., who produced the GOP memo, encouraged Democrats to accept the Justice Department's recommendations and "make the appropriate technical changes and redactions". Millions of Americans are asking one simple question: "what is he hiding?" Still, Schiff said, Democrats "look forward to conferring with the agencies to determine how we can properly inform the American people about the misleading attack on law enforcement by the GOP and address any concerns over sources and methods". Earlier this week, White House officials said the Democratic memo would go through the same national security and legal review as the Republican document.

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California said the move is "part of a unsafe and desperate pattern of cover-up on the part of the president".

The White House message caps off a week in which Republicans and Democrats on the committee have publicly fought, with the panel now erecting a wall to separate feuding Republican and Democratic staffers who had long sat side by side.

After the Nunes memo was released, Trump declared that it was evidence that he had been vindicated in the Russian Federation investigation.

Schiff, the panel's top Democrat, said that Trump was treating the 10-page document differently from the four-page Republican version commissioned by Nunes that was released last week.

Democrats last week warned Trump against using the Republican memo as a pretext to fire Deputy Attorney-General Rod Rosenstein, who hired Mueller and oversees the investigation, or to remove Mueller himself.

"After ignoring urging of Federal Bureau of Investigation and DOJ not to release misleading Nunes memo because it omits material facts, (the President) now expresses concerns over sharing precisely those facts with public and seeks to send it back to the same Majority that produced the flawed Nunes memo to begin with", he wrote on Twitter. They also noted that there was other evidence presented to the court besides Steele's information, though they have not provided details.

Page was monitored for almost a year. Rosenstein is now overseeing special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into whether there was any connection between Russians and Trump associates during the 2016 presidential campaign.

"The truth is that they (Democrats) are covering up that Hillary Clinton colluded with the Russians to get dirt on Trump to feed it to the FBI to open up an investigation into the other campaign", Nunes said on The Hugh Hewitt radio show on Wednesday.
