Trump won't declassify Democratic memo on Russian Federation probe

Trump says Democratic intelligence memo is'very political and needs redaction

The 10-page document, written by Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee in response to the Republican memo which accused both the FBI and the Department of Justice of bias against Trump in the investigation of alleged Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

In a letter to House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes, R-Calif., the White House said it could not release the Democrats' memo because the Justice Department "has identified portions.which it believes would create especially significant concerns for the national security and law enforcement interests".

Donald Trump is blaming Democrats for his decision not to release the Democratic response memo, citing the fact that it was "very political and long".

The letter from McGahn said that Democrats could try to rewrite the memo, and go through the same submission process, followed by another review by the White House.

"I'm going to start releasing more memos and, yes, I know I lied in my last one but, I'm still gonna release more to take on more of these government agencies", which, that news was met with a giant yawn and another giant, I guess you would call it, backlash of the American public saying we don't care what you have to say anymore.

"The problem with this whole committee and the investigation itself", said senior House Intelligence Committee member Rep. Thomas J. Rooney (R-Fla.), is that "in a normal world" the panel would have simply interviewed the Justice Department officials who approved the surveillance applications, like Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein.

House Democratic Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi called Trump's move to block the memo a "stunningly brazen attempt to cover up the truth about the Trump-Russia scandal from the American people". They know they have a favorable majority on the committee.

The FBI has been investigating long-standing allegations that Russian Federation under Vladimir Putin interfered in the 2016 US Presidential election, which saw Donald Trump defeat Hillary Clinton. "The FBI and the Justice Department have become targets of dirty tricks", Sen.

"As the DOJ emphasized to Chairman Nunes, the decision to employ an obscure and never before used House rule to release classified information without DOJ and Federal Bureau of Investigation vetting was 'extraordinarily reckless.' The selective release and politicization of classified information sets a awful precedent and will do long-term damage to the Intelligence Community and our law enforcement agencies".

"This memo totally vindicates "Trump" in probe", the president tweeted Saturday. Trump made the GOP document public last week, but won't do the same with the Democratic memo.

House intelligence committee ranking member Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., responded to those charges in the Democrats' countermemo.

As NCRM has reported, Trump was caught on hot mic following the State of the Union address advising a GOP lawmaker that he would release the original Devin Nunes memo, "100%", having not even read it.

Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee have several options.

"The DOJ appropriately provided the court with a comprehensive explanation of Russia's election interference, including evidence that Russian agents courted another Trump campaign foreign policy adviser, George Papadopoulos". The New York Times has filed a motion asking the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court to unseal all materials related to the wiretap.

While the Nunes memo is 4 pages long, people who have read it told NPR's Philip Ewing that the Schiff memo is 10 pages and contains many footnotes meant to rebut arguments made by the GOP document.
