Tons of rally in NYC towards deportation of activist

Borough immigration activist gets temporary deportation repieve

Ravi Ragbir feared he could have been arrested on Saturday again for deportation to Trinidad and Tobago, his country of birth which he hasn't seen in a quarter-century.

They say such targeting violates free speech rights guaranteed under the First Amendment of the US Constitution.

Ravi Ragbir and his wife Amy Gottlieb celebrate the news Friday morning that he had received a temporary stay of his deportation order. The 53-year-old Ragbir was detained last month during a routine meeting over a 2001 conviction for a mortgage fraud scheme.

Ravi Ragbir, center, executive director of the New Sanctuary Coalition, a Trinidad-born immigrant who works to protect New York's immigrant families from detention and deportation, walks with supporters as he arrives for his annual check-in with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in NY.

From 2011 to 2016, Ragbir was granted four stays of removal.

On Jan. 29, Manhattan Federal Judge Katherine Forrest issued an opinion that slammed ICE's decision to lock Ragbir up prior to his likely deportation, calling it "unnecessarily cruel" - and ordered Ragbir's immediate release.

Now Ragbir will only appear for a check-in with ICE at the Jacob K. Javits Federal Building in New York City on Saturday, according to several news reports. "This lawsuit is not just about me, it is about all of the members of our community who are speaking out in our struggle for immigrant rights".

ICE has denied such allegations stating: "ICE does not target unlawfully present aliens for arrest based on advocacy positions they hold or in retaliation for critical comments they make".

As a result of the lawsuit, immigration agents agreed to defer any new arrest of Ragbir, said the New York Immigration Coalition, a migrants' defense group.

"Any suggestion to the contrary is irresponsible, speculative and inaccurate", Albence said.

On Thursday, U.S. District Judge J. Paul Oetken of the Southern District of NY approved a stipulation signed by Ragbir's attorneys and the Southern District U.S. Attorney's Office granting Ragbir a temporary stay of deportation.
