Tamilisai, Vijayadharani welcome inauguration of Jaya's portrait in Assembly

With former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa's portrait set to be unveiled in the Assembly hall on Monday, the DMK has submitted a petition to the House secretary opposing the move.

Assembly Speaker P. Dhanapal has no right or powers to unveil the portrait of a person convicted in a corruption case, he charged.

Calling it a "black move", Stalin claimed the portrait was unveiled in a hurry as a petition filed by a DMK party MLA against it was pending in court.

DMK's ally Congress has, however, welcomed the government decision.

Jayalalithaa now joins Mahatma Gandhi, Periyar EV Ramasamy, CN Annadurai, K Kamaraj, Thiruvalluvar, BR Ambedkar, Muthuramalinga Thevar, C Rajagopalachari, Quaide Millath and her mentor MG Ramachandran as the first woman on the walls of the assembly. As far as I am concerned, there is nothing wrong in this and I have no objection. "Without pursuing a life of her own, Amma [Jayalalithaa] had had many achievements adorn her political life", the chief minister spoke in the Assembly.

Charges against Jayalalithaa were abated after her death on December 5, 2016 but the court did say that the former chief minister was in league with Sasikala. She is a mass leader and there is nothing wrong in honouring her.

Cooperation Minister Sellur Raju said Jayalalithaa was a revolutionary leader and she deserved to be in the hall of fame. He called upon the government to drop the idea at once and said his party would appr-oach the court to stop initiative, if necessary.

Several other leaders including Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president Su Thirunavukkarasar, CPI (M) State secretary G Ramakrishnan and DMDK leader Vijayakant have opposed the move.

However, the BJP begged to differ, saying that notwithstanding the conviction, there was nothing wrong in unveiling the portrait as Jayalalithaa had worked for the state's welfare.

The state Assembly Speaker unveiled the portrait in the presence of Chief Ministe E Palaniswami, Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and other MLAs.

Amid expectations that Prime Minister Modi would inaugurate/unveil Jayalalithaa's portrait, it was announced on Friday by the Govt. of Tamil Nadu that a portrait of the deceased chief-minister J. Jayalalithaa would be inaugurated by Speaker Dhanapal within the Legislative Assembly's premises.
