Guaita thrust out a left hand to keep out a more testing Coutinho attempt but Getafe's response to Barcelona's most enterprising spell of the match was impressive.

The Catalan side improved in the second half but still struggled to break down the visiting defence, while Getafe goalkeeper Vicente Guaita made a fine save in stoppage-time to prevent Suarez heading in a last-gasp victor as Colombia centre-back Yerry Mina started his Barcelona career with a stalemate.

"You can't win every match you play and you can't be consistent all the time", Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde said.

But with Samuel Umtiti suspended and Thomas Vermaelen sidelined with a hamstring injury, Ernesto Valverde has included him for the visit of Getafe.

If Diego Simeone's men can make further inroads before the teams meet at Camp Nou on 4 March, LaLiga might just have a title race as opposed to a procession this season.

"It is positive news that the two centre-backs, Yerry and Digne, have been quite good", Valverde said. "You deserve a lot of credit when you hold Barcelona scoreless".

Yerry Mina, who came off the bench against Valencia, is in line to make his full debut against Getafe regardless of Pique's fitness, with Valverde saying the Colombia global would be ready if called upon. The result moved Madrid into third place, ahead of Valencia, which hosts city rival Levante later Sunday.

As the tie entered the final 20 minutes, alongside the introduction of Andres Iniesta and Ousmane Dembele, Ernesto Valverde's side showed glimpses of the attacking potency that had seen them dismantle nearly all that has been put in front of them so far this season. Madrid won 5-2 at home to Real Sociedad on Saturday as Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick for the first time this season.

But, before that, Rico had intervened to prevent the home side going behind just prior to the interval, diving to his right to save an Aday Benitez penalty awarded for a handball by Luis Muriel.

Sevilla defeated Girona 1-0 with a victor by Pablo Sarabia early in the second half at Sanchez-Pizjuan stadium.

The Sevilla goalkeeper had a stellar performance, making several other great stops throughout the match.
