Sonos made a playlist for Apple's HomePod launch

These Home Pod missing features are already frustrating

These Home Pod missing features are already frustrating

Its chief selling point appears to be a high-quality speaker for using the Apple Music service-but not any other rival services. HomePod scans its environment - it knows, for instance, whether it's facing a wall, if it's in a corner, or far from walls entirely - and promptly adjusts its sound production.

HomePod may be a latecomer on the smart loudspeaker scene, but Apple's entry onto the dance floor is about to liven up the party. Consider that multiple HomePods can join together and automatically detect and balance one another, and you have a fairly sophisticated, multifunctional sound system that can generate needed ambient sound, while also offering a host of other features, if desired. Users can play tunes from Spotify, yes, but it's not integrated properly on there.

"Until Apple adds personalized voice recognition to this thing, you should definitely turn personal requests off", said Patel. Will it find any success in the smart speaker landscape, where the most prized quality is being actually smart?

With that in mind, I blasted the speaker in my family room and basement, as well as in a large USA TODAY photo studio and in an even more expansive, near-empty newsroom.

The Sonos One doesn't sound as good as HomePod either.

Apple's HomePod sounds fantastic, but it's meant to be used with Apple Music - you'll need an iOS device like an iPhone or iPad with Apple Music installed in order to even set up the HomePod.

"Siri on HomePod is not as full-featured as Siri on your Macs or iOS devices, and this was done by design". WhatsApp is supported by Siri, but beyond that very few apps are. You can't ask Siri to make a phone call. The speaker is powered by Apple A8 chip that makes it a smarter option in the town. The HomePod includes a high-excursion woofer, seven horn-loaded tweeters that come each with its own custom amplifier, as well as a six-microphone array.

The HomePod is priced at $349, which compares to an Amazon Echo at $149 and Google Home at $129, with the smaller devices of each costing about $50.

Apple HomePod reveiws are overall positive

Commands such as "Hey Siri, what's the weather like in New York City?" and "Hey Siri, play Kanye West" work without a hitch.

TechCrunch: "Apple's HomePod is easily the best sounding mainstream smart speaker ever". If you want to do the same on the HomePod, you'll need to use the AirPlay feature streamed from another Apple device.

"The HomePod sounds great but on the surface, it's debatable whether it's great enough to justify the limitations of its smart features when compared purely on those merits and not as a component of the Apple ecosystem".

Also worth noting here: if you're on Android you are fat out of luck - this is an Apple speaker that implores you to go all in on Apple.

Bluetooth streaming: You can't just stream music from any Bluetooth source to the HomePod, even though it has Bluetooth 5.0 hardware inside. "That is not the case right now", said USA Today's Edward C. Baig.

The Google Home Max lets users shop using just their voice.

Time: "With the HomePod, the company will have to prove that it can compete in a game for which somebody else wrote the rules".
