Second White House Staffer Resigns Over Domestic Abuse Claims

Several senior aides fanned out on the morning talk shows to explain how the White House handled the departure of staff secretary Rob Porter, a rising West Wing star who exited after two ex-wives came forward with allegations of spousal abuse.

According to Mark Zaid, an attorney who often represents clients in clearance cases underscored that the fact that many of these officials are affluent and have worked in the areas of finance with links to foreign governments would also contribute to a delay in the clearance process. When the allegations first emerged against Porter, who downplayed the claims from two ex-wives, a number of senior aides rallied around him, and the White House acknowledged that personal relationships may have played a role in their response.

Sorensen said in a statement that he, not his wife, was actually the "victim of repeated physical violence" in the marriage, according to the Post.

The actress on Friday fueled allegations that President Trump is having an affair, suggesting his lover is White House Communications Director Hope Hicks. One of the ex-wives offered pictures of a black eye as proof. Absolutely, and to the extent Trump views the executive branch as a type of corporation where everyone's first duty is to the boss, he must be mystified as to why the entire West Wing seems to have felt their first duty was to Porter. Chief of Staff John Kelly was aware of the allegations and also praised Porter's conduct in the White House, maintaining that "every individual deserves the right to defend their reputation".

Conway made similar statements on CNN's State of the Union with Jake Tapper, saying the president had instructed her to make it clear that Kelly's job is safe.

I don't think Trump can fire Hope, though.

"He says he's innocent, and I think you have to remember that", Trump said.

"We wish him well", Trump told reporters during a hastily arranged photo opportunity in the Oval Office. Kelly, along with Porter, helped organize the West Wing's policy and decision-making process and infused the staff with a clearer sense of objective, officials said.

As White House staff secretary, Porter was responsible for reviewing all documents signed by the president.

That's been the stance of the White House ever since. Kelly even went a step beyond, calling Porter "a man of true integrity and honor" and "a friend, a confidante, and a trusted professional". Porter has denied the allegations.

But he was supportive of his former staff secretary. A White House official speaking on the condition of anonymity said Mr Sorensen's position at the White House did not require a security clearance, and that his routine background check had been ongoing.

"There's no tolerance in this White House, and no place in America for domestic abuse", Pence said in an interview with Lester Holt.

His comments sparked criticism from Democrats, with former Vice-President Joe Biden saying Trump had downplayed the allegations against Porter. On Wednesday night, Donald Trump vented to advisers that Kelly had not fully briefed him on Porter's issues with women until recently, two sources told me. "Is there any other crime - and it's a crime - where there would be an explanation that the reason why we shouldn't pay attention to the transgression is because they're good at something?"
