Pence Gives Kim Jong Un's Sister the Cold Shoulder at the Olympics

"South Korea might run off ahead on a course of dialogue", a senior Foreign Ministry official said in the wake of Saturday's talks in Seoul between South Korean President Moon Jae-in and a high-level North Korean delegation at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics' Opening Ceremony a day earlier.

"There is no daylight between the United States, the Republic of Korea and Japan on the need to continue to isolate North Korea economically and diplomatically until they abandon their nuclear and ballistic missile program", Pence said as he flew back to the United States.

At the same moment, South Korean President Moon Jae-in shook hands with Kim Yo Jong, creating a historic moment and a photograph that gave hopes to many for peace between North and South Korea and movement toward unification and an end of hostilities.

But the prospect could sow division between the dovish leader, who has long argued for engagement with the nuclear-armed North to bring it to the negotiating table, and US President Donald Trump, who past year traded personal insults and threats of war with Kim.

Later, Moon watched the joint Korean women's ice hockey team - the first ever combined team at the Olympics - take on Switzerland, joining Kim Yo Jong and Kim Yong Nam, the North's nominal head of state, who is also visiting the South for the Games.

"She's a pretty important person in the regime", said Michael Madden, an analyst at the U.S. -Korea Institute at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.

They expressed scepticism on prospects for a summit, with professor Koh Yu-hwan of Dongguk University not expecting one "in the foreseeable future".

"The North Korean players really haven't had exposure to that before", says Griffin.

Pence's cold demeanor toward the North Koreans at the Pyeongchang games was overshadowed by friendly cooperation between the North and South.

The powerful Kim sister also attended Friday's opening ceremony, but before the hockey match there were none of the flag-burning protests over the North's Olympic presence that had marked the previous few days.

The Olympic coverage has truly been a shameful display and the gold medal for worst news stories goes to CNN.

Kim Yo Jong, 30, was elected to the politburo a year ago, but remains little known outside North Korea and has not appeared much in public until now.

"It's more likely that the image is that of a star in North Korea".

The troupe, cheered by dozens of fans as their bus pulled up under tight security before the game, have been dispatched south as part of a North Korean charm offensive after months of fiery rhetoric threatening nuclear war and provocative missile tests. She also verbally relayed a message from Mr Kim to invite Mr Moon to visit North Korea during the meeting, which was followed by a lunch, where guests were served kimchi from both sides.

Still, according to one diplomatic source, some in the Abe administration "would not oppose the very idea of talks" between Moon and Kim "if they would entail (Moon) pressing North Korea to denuclearize".
