Pakistan removes Farooq Sattar as Convener

The committee has agreed to challenge power of Sattar to issue party tickets for Senate elections

The committee has agreed to challenge power of Sattar to issue party tickets for Senate elections

Mr Baloch - the first one within the MQM-P who had disclosed that the party had split into two groups - met Dr Sattar at his PIB Colony residence and assured him of his full support at this juncture.Claiming that he had great respect for PSP President Anis Kaimkhani, Mr Baloch also invited him to rejoin the MQM.

Dr Sattar said that a court of the party workers in General Workers' meeting would now decide the fate of the organisation and the step taken today by some party leaders.

"The conspiracy has been revealed and the cat has come out of the bag now", he said. He said he tried his best to avoid a split within the party and he was firm on his decision to hold a workers' convention on Sunday while expressing the hope that "everyone" would attend the programme. He is no more MQM-P convener.

At least nine of the over four dozen members of the coordination committee are said to be government employees and all of them are supporting the Bahadurabad camp. He took into his hands the authority of adding and expelling party members which was prerogative of the coordination committee, he said.

"These issues were already cooking within the party".

The most recent episode of rift surfaced between two factions of the party over the issue of party tickets for the upcoming Senate elections, with the Bahadurabad group opposing Sattar's nomination of Kamran Tessori over veteran party leaders.

He said that now it was evident that the issue was not of allotment of the Senate tickets but it was just an issue of convenership of the party. "I will take a flight to Bahadurabad as soon as coordination committee agrees to that", he said in a lighter vein.

"My naive colleagues have proven that the issue was not about the nominations for Senate election, it was about the party leadership", a spirited Sattar told the journalists.

The party's coordination committee had earlier announced the decision to remove Sattar as the party's convener.

"I want to make MQM-P an ideological party of 1986".

"We will drop the names of controversial members including Farough Naseem, Ameenul Haq, Shabbir Qaimkhani, Amir Khan and Kamran Tessori and table four fresh names to ensure unity among our ranks". He said that the dissenting members agreed a day ago that none of them wanted to become a convener and had no interest in party positions but acted in contradiction today.
