"As usual the opportunist wasted not one second to exploit tragedy for political gain".

"Socialism is a movement that loves a smear", he said.

Cuomo and other prominent Democrats are "European socialists" who are taking over the Democratic Party, LaPierre told the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). "If they truly cared, what they would do is they would protect them".

He says opponents of gun rights want to "sweep under the carpet" the failure of school safety, families "and even the unbelievable failure of the FBI" to prevent the shootings.

If Democrats take over the House or Senate in this year's midterm elections, or-"God forbid", he warned-the White House, "the first to go will be the Second Amendment". "I've spoken to them often in the last two days", said President Trump, whose goal of arming teachers in schools has the NRA's support. "And thats particularly interesting because of all the sacred cows he's gored as President, the 2nd amendment and the NRA are not one of them". "Passing a law that makes it illegal for a 20-year-old to purchase a shotgun for hunting or an adult single mother from purchasing the most effective self-defense rifle on the market punishes law-abiding citizens for the evil acts of criminals". He criticized independent Vermont Sen. Kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren and other high-profile Democrats like New Jersey Democratic Sen.

The NRA is a key sponsor of the conference, and until now largely quiet about the Parkland, Fl., high school shooting.

"We have to harden or schools, not soften them up", the president said during a Thursday meeting with state and local officials about gun violence and school shootings. Numerous teens and their parents taking part have called for more curbs on guns.

"If you harden the sites you're not going to have this problem", he said.

Trump's and LaPierre's attacks on Thursday also extended to the mainstream news media, long a favorite foil of conservatives - and perhaps Trump more so than anyone.

NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre followed Loesh to another standing ovation.

In Florida, Republican Sen.

President Trump did part ways with the NRA on one item, a call to change the minimum age for buying a rifle or handgun from 18 to 21.

"The answer to the question is that people buy into my agenda, and I do support the second amendment", Rubio said.

Limiting the size of gun magazines and raising the age limit on buying rifles, including guns like AR-15 style rifles, are both positions that the NRA opposes.

The NRA's appearance comes the morning after a tense town hall-style broadcast on CNN in which student survivors of the Parkland massacre issued withering criticism of NRA spokesperson Dana Loesch, and Florida Republican senator, Marco Rubio.

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump hosted students and parents at the White House for a raw, televised listening session.

"I will be strongly pushing Comprehensive Background Checks with an emphasis on Mental Health".

"When you hear politicians who won't fix the broken system talk about expanding it, don't buy it", LaPierre said in a pre-recorded video.

Just minutes before LaPierre was scheduled to speak, however, Trump defended the NRA.

"There's nothing more important than protecting our children", Trump said, adding that he'd spoken with many members of Congress and NRA officials and insisting they would go along with his plans in the wake of last week's school shooting in Parkland, Florida, that left 17 people dead.
