The invite was presented verbally to President Moon Jae-in by Kim's younger sister, Kim Yo Jong, during a historic meeting between North and South Korean officials at Seoul's presidential Blue House. "I hope she defects".

A pair of impersonators played the roles of the rivals, surprising visitors to South Korea and becoming internet celebrities by the time they appeared at the opening ceremony.

Despite Pence's remarks, the current administrations in Washington and Seoul have at times adopted contrasting tones when it comes to North Korea. Kim Yo Jong is 28 years old, according to the US government.

Ms Kim, 30, the regime's propaganda chief and an increasingly influential figure in North Korea, is the first member of Pyongyang's ruling dynasty to set foot in the South since the end of the Korean war in 1953.

USA college student Otto Warmbier was captured in North Korea in 2016, authorities said for stealing a sign praising leader Kim Jong Un.

The last summit was held in October 2007 between Roh Moo-hyun and Kim Jong Il, the father of the current North Korean leader. Speaking to the USA and Japanese troops at the Yokota Air Base outside Tokyo, Pence vowed to continue "maximum pressure campaign" on North Korea in a bid to forcing Pyongyang to give up its nuclear missile programme. Estimated to be around 30 years old, she is perhaps the only person to give direct opinions to Kim Jong Un.

One telling incident came early.

How significant is Kim Jong-Un's sister's visit to South Korea and the meeting with the South's president in particular, in your view?

The latest show of cooperation is a surprising invitation to the North Korean capital Pyongyang that leader Kim Jong-un offered to South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

And Pyongyang's official Korean Central News Agency focussed on the team and the North Korean cheerleaders rather than the 8-0 defeat - mentioning neither the outcome nor the score in its dispatch.

Kim's sister Kim Yo Jong, who is visiting South Korea as his special envoy for the Winter Olympics, conveyed her brother's invitation during a meeting at the presidential Blue House, officials from the Blue House said. After the game, the entire group walked around to the Koreans' bench to greet them and pose for photos.

South Korea suggested the formation of a joint team as part of its efforts to use the Games to re-engage with the North and pave the way for talks over the North's weapons programme.

And apparently, they got kicked out, too.

At a reception on Friday, Pence shook hands with delegates from participating countries, but not with Kim Yong Nam, the leader of North Korea's Olympic delegation.
