North Korea judged winner of diplomatic gold at Olympics

The unimaginable moment of South Korea's President Moon Jae-in shaking hands with North Korea's "First Sister" came true.

A high-level North Korean delegation including leader Kim Jong Un's sister has arrived at a train station in Pyeongchang hours ahead of the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics.

The sight of North and South Koreans marching together for the first time in a decade was the culmination of months of work by Seoul.

Kim Jong Un's sister "courteously" handed President Moon Jae-in a personal letter from the North Korean leader as the pair met for historic talks at the South Korea Winter Olympics.

Asked about criticism that Pence stood and cheered only for Team USA and stayed seated when the North and South Koreans marched in under a unified flag, the official was unapologetic.

Responding to Mr. Moon's optimism about where the North's Olympic participation might lead, Pence, once again, defined the conditions required for the U.S.to engage in dialogue with Kim Jong Un.

China says it is committed to fully enforcing United Nations resolutions on North Korea, which include sweeping sanctions, but that all parties must make more effort to reduce tensions and get the talks process restarted.

However, South Korea's main opposition party warned that any talks between the two Koreas where the scrapping of North Korea's nuclear program was not a precondition would only "benefit the enemy".

Moon reportedly responded saying "an early resumption of dialogue between the United States and the North is needed also for the development of the South-North Korean relationship".

Kim Yo Jong, 28, is the first member of the ruling Kim family bearing the bloodline of the sacred Mount Paektu, a centerpiece of the North's idolization and propaganda campaign, to cross the border into the South since the 1950-53 Korean War.

Loud applause greeted the appearance of Moon, Kim Yo Jong and her delegation at the concert, attended by more than a thousand people.

Images from the lunch meeting at the Blue House, which was broadcast live on South Korean TV, showed Moon sat in front of Kim Yo Jong, rather than Kim Yong Nam, technically the more senior official present in the meeting and head of the North Korean delegation.

The two are easily confused, but there is a world of difference between them: Pyongyang is the capital of nuclear-armed North Korea, while Pyeongchang is the South Korean region hosting the Winter Olympics.

President Moon hosted Kim at the presidential mansion for lunch on Saturday - a session in which Kim extended an invitation for Moon to visit North Korea later this year.

Still, it was widely believed to reflect US suspicions toward the recent rapprochement between the two Koreas.

At a Friday VIP reception for delegation leaders, Pence arrived late and stayed for just five minutes - and did not interact with the delegation from the North.

In an effort to limit the fiery rhetoric of both leaders, the US and South Korea agreed to suspend military exercises in the region for the duration of the Olympics.

The north's state-run agency said the talks were "warm" but added they were "frank and candid".
