North Korea held 'warm' but 'candid' talks with South Korea

Moon did not immediately accept the invitation but said he hopes the "right conditions" will be created so it can go ahead.

Pence did say, however, that Moon shared with him details of his meeting with North Korean leaders, without elaborating.

It was the first time an inter-Korean team had competed at an Olympic Games.

North and South Korean leaders swapped warm handshakes and smiles at Friday's opening ceremony, enabling the International Olympic Committee to present the Games as enablers of peace and take the media spotlight away from a Russian doping scandal that has plagued it for years.

The highest profile member of the North Korean delegation to the Games, she is the first immediate member of the North's ruling family to visit the South since the 1950-1953 Korean war.

The United States is prepared to talk to North Korea without preconditions, U.S. Vice President Mike Pence said in comments published on Sunday evening.

The U.S., on the other hand, led by Trump and Pence, isn't making much of an effort to embrace all the recent attempts at diplomacy with North Korea.

Ms Kim and the North's ceremonial head of state Kim Yong-nam made up the most senior delegation from the North to visit the South since the Korean War in the 1950s.

Pence is viewing the short-track competition, in which eight Americans are participating.

During the Saturday meeting, Moon also called on North Korea to créate a space to dialogue with the United States about denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

President Thomas Bach plans to visit North Korea after the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, cementing ties with the reclusive state which used the event to restart political dialogue with South Korea.

'Having these red communists in the heart of Seoul is an utter humilation!' one protester shouted near the venue as dozens of others waved banners condemning both Moon and Kim Jong Un.

The North Korean delegation's visit to South Korea was the first trip since August 2009, when a high-level North Korean delegation attended the funeral of former South Korean President Kim Dae-jung, who held the first-ever inter-Korean summit with then North Korean leader late Kim Jong-il in 2000. "It is important to move forward with the drills as planned", Abe said, according to South's presidential Blue House.

Still, the United States has a huge influence on talks of how to handle the North's threats of nuclear attacks. US Vice President Mike Pence, sitting a few seats away in the same Opening Ceremony VIP booth, looked stony-faced as the scene unfolded.

South Korean Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon on Sunday hosted a lunch for the high-ranking North Korean delegation, including Kim Jong-un's younger sister.

The discussions from Saturday's meeting weren't immediately released.

Japan does not participate in the military exercises, but it is within reach of North Korean missiles and relies heavily on USA forces and their readiness to deal with that threat. Pence conferred with U.S. President Donald Trump every day he was in Asia.
