"This dramatic Pluto flyover begins over the highlands to the southwest of the great expanse of nitrogen ice plain informally named Sputnik Planitia", Nasa said in a statement, describing New Horizons' journey.

"And now, we've been able to make images farther from Earth than any spacecraft in history", Stern said. The distance? Over 6.1 billion kilometers.

New Horizons is best known for taking stunning photos of Pluto back in 2015. New Horizon's next target is a flyby through the Kuiper belt; hence, the latest images give an overview of what new destination of New Horizons. But its mission isn't done.

NASA's New Horizons spacecraft has captured the farthest images from Earth by a spacecraft and set a new record.

New Horizons was even further away from Earth than the Voyager 1 space probe when it turned towards the Earth on 14 February 1990 and took a picture of a tiny dot. And with the probe continuing to hurtle through space at a speed of 700,000 miles (1.1 million km) per day, it will continue to collect more and more distant views of the universe. "The tour moves north past the rugged and fractured highlands of Voyager Terra and then turns southward over Pioneer Terra - which exhibits deep and wide pits - before concluding over the bladed terrain of Tartarus Dorsa in the far east of the encounter hemisphere". The still-active probe is now over 21 billion kilometers from Earth, but NASA long ago chose to turn off the probe's camera to save on power.

Such is the case with its New Horizons spacecraft, which made history by turning its telescopic camera toward a field of stars on December 5 when it snapped a photograph of the "Wishing Well" galactic star cluster 3.79 billion miles away from Earth.

But now, New Horizons mission is yet to finish as it travels at a speed of 1.1m km a day to reach its final objective: the observation of objects in the Kuiper-Edgeworth Belt which got underway previous year.

It wasn't until this past December when Voyager 1's record was finally broken. The spacecraft observed numerous Kuiper Belt objects (KBOs) as well as dwarf planets at unique phase angles. A Pluto-style flyby is scheduled for January 1, 2019.

It also aims to observe at least two-dozen other objects in the region as well as dwarf planets and "Centaurs", former Kuiper-Edgeworth Belt objects in unstable orbits that cross the orbits of the giant planets.
