A sword-wielding man who went on a rampage in a church in Yog-yakarta was shot and wounded by local police yesterday morning.

Witnesses said the attacker charged in through the main entrance of the church, hurting a member of the parish before heading towards the altar in the middle of Sunday Mass.

The 22-year-old attacker decapitated statues of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary during the incident, officials said.

Worshipper Andhi Cahyo said a few minutes after the service started, a congregation member ran in with a bleeding head while he was chased by a young man holding a sharp weapon.

The injured, included a police officer who tried to shield the priest from the attacker.

He said: Everybody started panicking and screaming.

'After the warning shot was sacked, the attacked charged toward the officer with his sword. "The officer then shot him below his stomach, but he managed to injure the cop before being subdued", Cahyo said.

All victims were taken to hospital for treatment. "We can confirm the suspect has been detained and is being treated in hospital".

A police spokesman said: Four people have been injured in the incident - quite seriously - but we still can not determine the perpetrator's motive.

Police are investigating the case, trying to find out the motive of the strike and the network linked with the man.

Video shows people in the church throwing books at the man as he lunged toward them with his sword.

Three months later, a church in Samarinda, East Kalimantan, was struck by a homemade bomb which injured four people.
