Each claimed an Olympic gold medal in her specialty: Vonn in the downhill in 2010; Shiffrin in the slalom in 2014, when Vonn was out after right knee surgery.

Vonn has had her share of injuries in her career, including the knee operation that kept her out of Sochi but she says she is in good shape now - even if she has to incorporate maintenance work into her regular training.

Some folks to keep an eye on who could spring a surprise include Petra Vlhova of Slovakia, the last person to beat Shiffrin in a slalom race before the American's lengthy winning streak; Sofia Goggia of Italy, who will be making her Olympic debut but won two World Cup races on the mountain in South Korea in March 2017; Michael Matt of Austria, whose older brother Mario defeated Hirscher for the gold in slalom four years ago; Andrew Weibrecht of the US (nickname: War Horse), who came out of nowhere to pick up medals in 2010 and 2014 and maybe - just maybe - could do it again.

If Mikaela Shiffrin continues to race as well as she has been, she is setting herself up to be the biggest star of the Pyeongchang Olympics.

This time around she confirmed she will compete in the downhill, super-G and the combined.

She said she and the other passengers eventually made it to South Korea. Trying to be Lindsey Vonn, superstar, hasn't worked so swell for her at the Games.

But, after Vonn dabbed away her tears with a tissue, know who stole the show at a packed press conference?

Vonn will be an overwhelming favorite in the downhill in South Korea, having won the last three World Cup races in that event.

International Ski Federation (FIS) chief race director Markus Waldner said on Thursday that organisers were considering their options in case the gondola was unable to ship the skiers to the top of the downhill run. She enjoys sleeping the majority of the day. I got her two and a half years ago.

"Yeah, um, I'm not sure where to start, exactly", Shiffrin said, rolling her eyes a bit as she searched for the right words.

She said the the pressure is even greater now because this is her last Games and "because I want to end on a high note". "But in 2018, I'm a much stronger athlete, not just physically but mostly mentally. She travels with me everywhere". It's extremely lonely on the road and since I got divorced I had a lot of free time on my hands at night.

"The thing that gives me the most satisfaction is the skiing part of it". Not just of Alpine skiing, but the entire Winter Games. "I really want to put an exclamation point on my career". And I really had hoped he would be alive to see me. An overall World Cup title last season. "I'm feeling much better, much more like myself". "As long as my knee is holding up and I'm still able to win then I will keep skiing, but it really depends on my knee, that's the determing factor on my retirement".

"You're insane", Shiffrin replied.

"They always look out for me". There are trophies, plates and medals at every turn, from the custom-built shelves on both sides of her fireplace to the family room cabinets. But I know he's watching.
