Nancy Pelosi, the minority leader in the US House of Representatives, has given a record-breaking eight-hour speech in an attempt to persuade Republicans to allow a vote on protecting Dreamers, young undocumented immigrants brought to the US as children.

"Pelosi was speaking against a compromise federal budget deal recently announced by Senate leaders that would lift spending caps and avert a looming government shutdown €" but that does not address the sensitive issue of immigration.

She said she will oppose the deal unless House Speaker Paul Ryan commits to bringing up DACA legislation for a vote.

The California Democrat said the emerging spending plan includes "many Democratic priorities".

Generally, in the House, each representative is only given one minute to speak, but party leaders have unlimited time to make their case, so Pelosi chose to speak for the entire day.

"This bill is the product of extensive negotiations among congressional leaders and the White House", Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican, said on the Senate floor.

Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC), who leads a caucus of House conservatives, has signaled he and a number of lawmakers in his group are unlikely to vote for a short-term spending bill with such high budget numbers.

Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan of OH told Business Insider that while he thought Pelosi's speech was warranted and the right cause, it was unclear whether moderate members looking to avoid a shutdown would hold the line. For eight hours and seven minutes, Pelosi would not allow her voice to be silenced and, in doing so, allowed the voice of 700,000 DACA recipients to be heard within the chamber.

More than six hours later, she was still talking.

Government funding will lapse for the second time in less than a month if Congress can not pass a funding bill by midnight Thursday. "I'm going to structure it in such a way that's fair to everyone", he said".

He said he does think there should be someone held accountable for Porter's hiring, but still, the resignation comes as a shock to people who know Porter as a person who "gives the demeanor of being the last person you would suspect of this kind of behavior". Sarah Huckabee Sanders said that the administration doesn't agree with Pelosi's request to include immigration in the budget deal.

"I hope I hear Nancy Pelosi... as vigorously opposing Democrats colluding with Republicans to deport Dreamers", he said, adding that it is imperative for Democrats like Pelosi to maintain their "political principles".
