Indian PM makes historic visit to Palestine

Modi, the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Palestine, is reaching Ramallah amid heightened tensions in the region after US President Donald Trump recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

The mausoleum complex consists of Arafat's burial chamber, a prayer pavilion and landscaped gardens - all situated in a 6,550 sq. m. site.

Traditionally, India has been a vocal champion of the Palestinian cause.

Palestinian official Nabil Shaath said Modi and Abbas are to sign cooperation agreements worth $50 million.

In response, PM Modi thanked Palestine President Abbas for the Grand Collar of the state of Palestine conferred on him.

PM Modi said that India-Palestine ties stronger than ever and both nations share historic ties.

Wooing UAE businessmen to invest in India, Modi said India's leap in World Bank's ease of doing business rankings from 142 to 100 was "unprecedented, but we are not satisfied". He said India remains "committed to Palestinian national rights" but stopped short of offering support for Abbas' political agenda.

In his keynote address at the World Government Summit in Dubai, Modi rued that even after all the development, poverty and malnutrition have still not been eliminated.

Modi hailed his government's bold decisions like demonetisation and implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST).

Some 2,000 Indian expatriates patiently waited at the Dubai Opera for more than an hour to complete security checks before their prime minister arrived. And Modi has openly embraced their growing strategic partnership, hosting the Israeli prime minister in New Delhi three weeks ago after making a high-profile visit to Tel Aviv last July.

Plans and information about the temple were presented to Mr Modi and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, by members of the temple committee before delegations began talks on Saturday.

This was the first time that an Indian Prime Minister has stepped foot in Palestine that New Delhi has recognised for almost three decades.

Modi is visiting the United Arab Emirates for the second time after his 2015 trip to the country.

Also the amount of money sent back annually by the Indian diaspora in the region is around $35 billion, which sustains millions of families back in India, he added.
