'Important occasion': North Korea praises visit to the South during Winter Olympics

While athletes from South and North Korea marched into the Olympic Stadium together behind a Korean flag showing the whole peninsula in blue, representatives from USA, South Korea and North Korea were boxed together in the VIP grandstand as the Winter Games of Pyeongchang were opened on Friday (February 9).

President Moon Jae In was also captured shaking hands with Kim Yeo Jong, the youngest sister of Kim Jung Un.

Pence, right, and Kim Yo Jong, second left, attend the opening ceremony of Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympic Games.

After a tape-delayed Opening Ceremony that brought in an average 28.3 million viewers across platforms, a respectable dip of 3.4 million from Sochi four years ago, early ratings for Saturday's primetime have the NBC coverage on par with the same night four years ago.

Vice President Mike Pence, who was visiting South Korea for the Olympics, has used increasingly hostile language against the North in recent days, calling it the most tyrannical regime on the planet and steadfastly avoiding interactions with North Korean delegates at the Games.

Kim's unusual invitation, which was received by Moon with both caution and optimism, was the latest sign of growing closeness between the two rival governments after an exceptionally tense period over the North's nuclear weapons program.

"It didn't affect the opening ceremony", Park said.

Some people already are calling it the "Peace Olympics". The South Koreans want to use the Olympics to ease tensions spurred by North Korea's pursuit of nuclear weapons.

Kim still wants assurances that the United States won't attack or try to topple his government. Last week, the United States said it would ramp up sanctions.

During Pence's visit, Moon assured the vice president he would tell the North Koreans clearly that they would not get economic or diplomatic concessions for just talking, only for taking concrete steps toward denuclearization, the newspaper said.
