The United States has repeatedly pressed China, North Korea's most significant trading partner and main ally, to do more to rein in Pyongyang's nuclear and missile ambitions.

The two North Koreans are on a landmark visit to the South amid a flurry of abrupt reconciliation steps, and both attended the opening ceremony before having a luncheon with Moon at Moon's presidential palace earlier Saturday.

Her visit may "open the gates wide" for talks between the Koreas and contribute to regional peace, according to an editorial in the liberal Kyunghyang Sinmun newspaper.

There is a genuine story to be told in connection Kim Yo Jong's appearance at the Olympics, but that story isn't mainly about the woman.

"But it turned out that there were many things similar and in common", she went on. The official added that Pence does not believe that the invitation dilutes the toughness of the United States pressure campaign on North Korea. While the possibility that South Koreans may be drawn into North Korea's honey trap can not be ruled out, most Koreans, including young people, have had their fill of the North's provocations, and are highly unlikely to be seduced by Kim's charm offensive.

Moon tried to engineer U.S.

The recent detente, anchored by South Korea's hosting of the Winter Olympic Games that began on Friday, came despite an acceleration in the North's weapons programmes a year ago and pressure from Seoul's allies in Washington. U.S. President Donald Trump and the North Korean leadership traded insults as tensions rose.

Kim's proposal for a summit was "a brilliant diplomatic maneuver", said Andrei Lankov, a historian at Kookmin University in Seoul who once studied in Pyongyang.

I'll say this for Kim Jong Un's sister, Kim Yo Jong - she's considerably better looking than the goon who runs North Korea.

Signs of discord in the U.S. South Korea's defence ministry and cybersecurity experts are included in the taskforce investigating Friday's attack, but the possible culprit is being kept under wraps.

Moon's office initially provided conflicting accounts of whether he accepted the invitation, with a Blue House spokesperson later clarifying that pre-conditions first needed to be met.

USA officials have been urging South Korea to be cautious in its rapprochement with the North - a point Pence drilled home in private meetings with Moon on Thursday.

Earlier Friday, Pence visited the wreckage of the Cheonan, the South Korean ship sunk by North Korea in 2010, and visited with North Korean defectors to highlight the brutal nature of Kim Jong Un regime. North Korea will not relinquish its nuclear arsenal because its government sees it as an essential means of guaranteeing its survival - and after Saddam Hussein and Muammar Gaddafi, who would blame them?

Kim Jong Un's sister with deadly side-eye at Pence.

It said the two sides held "a comprehensive discussion. on the inter-Korean relations and various issues on the Korean peninsula in an amicable atmosphere", but did not say whether the North's weapons programme was mentioned. -South Korean military drills, Yonhap news agency reported on Saturday.

What it means, I think, is that when a population is under the gun, some of its citizens will indulge in wishing thinking on special occasions.

Moon knows the risks. His approval ratings, while still high at 63 percent, fell after he pushed for a unified women's ice hockey team for the two Koreas.

Korean players Kim Se-lin (2nd from L) and Randi Heesoo Griffin (R) keep a Swiss player in check during the teams' Group B game of the women's ice hockey tournament at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics in Gangneung, Gangwon Province, on February 10, 2018.

The officials, who spoke on condition because they were not authorized to discuss the USA approach publicly, also denied that Pence had been blindsided by the seating arrangement - with the North Koreans in the row behind him, allowing Kim Yo Jong to be easily pictured in profile next to the vice president.
