France presses Russian Federation over Syria as more die in besieged rebel area

In a telephone call, French President Emmanuel Macron pressed Russia's Vladimir Putin to do all he could to ensure Damascus puts an end to the humanitarian emergency in Eastern Ghouta and Idlib, the Elysee Palace said in a statement.

In Kuwait, he will attend a meeting of the "Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS", the first gathering at this level since US-backed local forces drove the jihadist group out of its Syrian bastion Raqa, a statement said.

"As we were pulling out the children and the dead from under the rubble, they targeted us with five rockets - directly targeting us", he said.

Russia's U.N. Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said he will raise the coalition's airstrike during closed consultations later Thursday in the U.N. Security Council.

In Damascus, shelling of the old city quarter by rebel factions in eastern Ghouta killed two civilians and damaged houses and properties. The U.S. military said late Wednesday it launched airstrikes on Syrian government-backed troops after as many as 500 attackers began what appeared to be a coordinated assault on the SDF accompanied by U.S. advisers in Deir el-Zour province.

U.S. State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said the United States supports the UN ceasefire call.

Bombing raids resumed on several Eastern Ghouta towns on Friday morning after a few hours of calm, AFP correspondents reported.

The United States backed the plea but Russian Federation - a longtime ally of Syria's government - shrugged it off.

The US Central Command said the coalition acted in self-defence after pro-government forces moved on an area under the control of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces.

The Turkish General Staff also said on Saturday that the armed forces "destroyed" 36 targets and "neutralized" 79 militants in the airstrikes carried out in the Afrin region overnight. The Turkish Operation Olive Branch in the Afrin region in northern Syria entered its fourth week on Saturday.

This came in response to a report that USA -led coalition forces had carried out a series of air and artillery strikes against pro-Assad forces, which, according to coalition sources, killed an estimated 100 fighters.

Turkish and Free Syrian Army forces on Sunday cleared another village from PYD/PKK terrorists in northwestern Syria, near the Turkish border.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry also doubled down, calling the USA strikes "new aggression that poses a war crime and a crime against humanity".

Assad has accused repeatedly Erdogan of being a Muslim Brotherhood supporter and a catalyst for the terrorist groups operating in Syria.
