Four Elephants Killed After Speeding Train Hits Them In Assam

As many as five elephants were killed after being hit by a speeding train near Hawaipur railway station in Assam last night.

The chief spokesman of the NFR, Pranab Jyoti Sharma informed that the engine number 20072 of train number 15611 (Guwahati - Silchar Fast passenger) dashed against a herd of elephant at km 167-7 between stations Hawaipur and Lamshakhan under Lumding Division of N F Railway resulting in death of five elephants.

The source said cases of elephants dashing against trains in areas where they constantly cross tracks would greatly increase now wherever track doubling work is on.

Locals alleged that they tried to signal the loco pilot to slow down due to the movement of elephants but to no avail, resulting in death of four pachyderms.

A special train has been sent from Lumding, to help the stranded passengers, an official of Northeast Frontier Railway said.

The railway official claimed that the incident had taken place at a location where there was no notified elephant corridor.

The engine of the train derailed due to the impact at 9.40 p.m.

The incident in an area known to be the elephant corridor.

A herd of the animals was crossing the railway tracks on Saturday when the train ploughed into them.

The NFR is keen on mitigating elephant mortality on railway tracks but at the same time safety of train movements has to be ensured, he added.

On December 10 past year, six elephants including a pregnant jumbo was killed in collision with the Guwahati-Naharlagun Express train at Bamgaon in Sonitpur district. Data provided by the Wildlife Division of Assam's Forest Department say electrocution, train-hit and attack by villagers killed 40 elephants in 2017.

India has almost 30,000 elephants and, as of a 2011 census, Assam was home to around 5,600 of them.
