Over the weekend, on Super Bowl Sunday, the game hit a new record of 3.4 million concurrent players, Epic announced in a blog post this week.

Epic Games Fortnite has been absolutely killing it of late - from sensing an opportunity from the Battle Royale genre a year ago, the Studio introduced Fortnite Battle Royale, the first console take on the 100 man free-for-all which skyrocketed numbers.

Fortnite is available now in early access on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Fortnite is getting so big so fast that Epic's blog post also featured numerous mentions of how they are hiring in offices in Seattle, North Carolina, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, the UK, Stockholm, and Seoul.

Unfortunately, the stampede of folks rushing to play Fortnite and ultra-popular spin-off Fortnite Battle Royale crushed the servers, resulting in connection issues and outages. There's a whole lot more waffling in the post if you fancy reading it, although in laymen's terms, the gist of the matter is clear: 'When 3.4 million clients are connected at the same time these inefficiencies add up quickly'.

Many Fortnite fans will agree that server issues are far from a new occurrence in the game, as one recent instance of the servers going offline caused Epic Games to put out an apology and offer a promise of compensation to those affected. Looking ahead, Epic says it seeks to expand and optimize its server system to accommodate the game's ballooning player base.
