In this case, Accuweather now acknowledges the word "test" was on the National Weather Service warning this morning.

"We're now looking into why the test message was distributed by at least one private sector company, and will provide more information as soon as we have it".

The NWS said it was actively trying to find out how the message, which was issued by the Tsunami Warning Center, had been mistakenly sent out by third-party apps.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Tsunami Warning Center determined that the wave was a minor tsunami, coinciding with a strong windstorm over the Jersey Shore. "Repeat, a Tsunami Warning is not in effect", they say on Twitter.

AccuWeather, the commercial forecasting system that on Tuesday morning launched a volley of alerts customized for seaside communities from ME to Matagorda Island, doubled-down Wednesday on its assertion that the National Weather Service triggered the panic by fouling up the coding for what was supposed to be a routine test message.

NWS says, "There is NO current Tsunami Warning, Advisory, Watch, or Threat for the U.S. Please refer to tsunami.gov and @NWS_NTWC for up to date information". He said that after clicking on the push notification for details he realized it was just a test.

The statement was a follow-up to the update issued late Tuesday by the Weather Service's communication's office, which is an arm of the federal government, suggesting that unnamed "private sector companies" misread the coding on its original message, which was properly coded as a test.

The false alarm came less than a month after a ballistic missile urgent alert was accidentally sent in Hawaii.

But it said the weather service miscoded the test.

"I'm not sure how they run their business or who sends out the alerts", said Lopez.

Many people noted the similarity between the two events and posted about it on social media - with some even wondering if the Hawaii employee, who was sacked for sending the mistaken missile alert, had found a new job.
