Facebook testing 'downvote' button to mark offensive, misleading comments

Facebook is testing a surprise new feature

The downvote button could be a major addition to the improved reactions option on the social media platform and could help take down inappropriate or misleading comment or post on the platform.

The test is running on public pages to signal inappropriate, offensive or misleading comments. "We are exploring a feature for people to give us feedback about comments on public page posts". Only a select number of test users have access to it, but the function is found on any comment made on public page posts. This isn't to be confused with a "Dislike" button because according to a Facebook spokesperson, "We are not testing a dislike button".

Facebook is now testing a "downvote" button, effectively creating a counter to the classic "like" button and giving users the opportunity to dislike a friend's post, according to reports.

Facebook stressed the function is nothing akin to a dislike button. Instead it rolled out "reactions", a range of emoji emotions, creating a new shorthand to express thoughts and feelings beyond the ubiquitous thumbs-up button. CEO Mark Zuckerberg also said in 2015 the company was working on a "downvote" button at the time. "Not every moment is a good moment".

Nevertheless, Hudler said abusive comments can be problematic on Facebook.

"Sincerest form of flattery!" The world's largest social network is testing it in the short-term for a small percentage of US users, and it now doesn't affect how prominently a post is featured in a list of comments, a company representative said.

Despite the name, the function is nothing like Reddit's own downvoting option, which can demote questionable content further down the comment section. Facebook already has a "hide" and "report" button for comments. "This is running for a small set of people in the USA only".
