Drone light show scrapped after logistical challenges at Olympics opening ceremony

The highly-anticipated sports event featured a surprise appearance from a pop star and with drones that lit up the sky during the kick-off.

In addition to the opening ceremony, the drones will be used throughout the games, creating light-filled formations every night from February 10 -24 during the nightly victory ceremonies.

The Intel drone light show team produces a performance for the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, featuring more than 1,200 Intel Shooting Star drones.

Kicking off the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, viewers from around the globe were treated to a record-breaking light show during the opening ceremony that surpassed Intel's previous record of 500 drones flown simultaneously in Germany in 2016. The fleet of drones is controlled by one pilot. The performance also surpassed the 300-drone salute that was pre-recorded with Lady Gaga for Super Bowl LI past year. However, the company is planning on doing smaller-scale, 300-drone shows during the medal ceremonies and it has tweaked the Shooting Star's design a little in order to accommodate South Korea's weather conditions.

Each of Intel's foam and plastic drones is equipped with LED lights that can create more than 4 billion color combos.

"It's in essence technology meeting art", says Anil Nanduri, general manager of Intel's drone group to Wired.

"As it turns out, bring 1,218 of those drones into harmony doesn't present much more of a logistical challenge than 300, thanks to how the Shooting Star platform works".

Every drone acts like an aerial pixel if you will and a larger number of pixel make for a more accurate and life-like image in the sky.

If you missed the live stream of Intel's drone show, you can catch it again tonight on NBC or on the YouTube video below for as long as that will be up.

Intel is the official drone partner of the Olympics.
