Dozens of White House Staffers Still Lack Full Security Clearances

Porter denied the allegations when he resigned from his position on Wednesday and said the two women were involved in a "smear campaign" against him. The White House claims that the plethora of delays is par for the course, but several sources told the outlet that that it is, in fact, highly unusual. In June 2017, Porter's preliminary file was sent from the Federal Bureau of Investigation to the White House security office. Sorensen was a former top policy adviser to Maine GOP Gov. Paul LePage. It was unclear from the Post report if that was Sorensen's version of what Corbett claimed was him running over her foot.

Corbett claimed that her ex-husband "ran a vehicle over her foot, put out a cigarette on her hand, threw her into a wall and grasped her menacingly by her hair while they were alone on their boat in remote waters off Maine's coast, an incident she said left her fearing for her life".

Sorensen added he was "considering legal options to address her defamation" and, in a text to the Post, said he resigned so he wouldn't be another distraction for the president.

Corbett released a statement on Medium saying she stands by her allegations, saying her story is "messy, humiliating and tragic, but it's my truth".

"I was appalled when I learned of the allegations against Rob Porter", Pence said in an NBC interview Friday from South Korea, where he was attending the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics. Sorensen denied the claims and even said it was he who was the victim.

White House Chief of Staff John Kelly and counsel Don McGrath reportedly knew about the allegations. One of the ex-wives offered pictures of a black eye as proof.

"Meanwhile the incredible cocoon of privilege and ego with which the President envelopes himself blinds him to the sheer horror of his statements in defense of Mr. Porter", Rather noted.

As the aftershocks of the accusations against Porter reverberated for a fifth day, Trump stayed out of sight on a rainy Saturday in Washington and tweeted along while watching Fox News shows.

"He has many times come to the aid of women privately", she said.

'We certainly wish him well.

White House spokesman Raj Shah said Thursday that the White House "could have done better" over the last few days in "dealing with" the domestic violence allegations against Porter.

The president's praise for Porter's job performance drew a rebuke from former Vice President Joe Biden.

"Is there any other crime - and it's a crime - where there'd be an explanation that the reason we shouldn't pay attention to the transgression is because they're good at something?" That has added to Trump's frustrations about the chief of staff's attempts to control him and Kelly's recent inflammatory comments about immigrants, according to two people who speak to the president regularly but are not authorized to publicly discuss private conversations.
