Court To Announce Decision On Russian Athletes Hours Before Opening Ceremonies

After the CAS handed 28 stranded Russian athletes a chance of making it back to the world stage, the applications from others started flowing in as well.

However, 169 carefully screened Russian athletes are being allowed to compete under an Olympic banner. The Court of Arbitration said it would hold a hearing to consider their request on Wednesday, but even if there was a ruling in their favor, it would be likely too late for them to compete.

"The panel highlighted that its role, according to the IOC Executive Board decision of 5 December 2017, was not to establish ADRVs [Anti-Doping Rule Violations], but to confirm that athletes can be considered clean for a potential OAR [Olympic Athlete from Russia] invitation to the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018".

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) said on Friday it has dismissed 47 appeals from Russian athletes and coaches to participate in the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, which open later in the day.

CAS upheld the appeal of 28 athletes due to insufficient evidence but the International Olympic Committee still refused to invite them saying the evidence was there.

Those appealing - including gold medalists speedskater Viktor Ahn and biathlete Anton Shipulin - are asking the tribunal to allow them to compete.

Earlier this month the International Olympic Committee clarified that the Invitation Review Panel (IRP) had discretion over the conditions that had to be met before athletes could compete.

"The applicants are challenging the IOC's refusal to invite them to participate in the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympic Winter Games".

The Swiss-based court's "ad hoc" division in Pyeongchang says it will announce its decision in the cases involving 45 athletes and two coaches at 11 a.m. local time, just nine hours before the opening ceremonies.

Among the complainants is the cross-country skier Alexander Legkov, a crowned Olympic champion at the 2014 Sochi Games.
