Concern for Conte with Morata still unavailable for Chelsea

Antonio Conte worried key player may not return this season

Chelsea striker Morata has been out for almost a month with a back injury and Conte claimed that his absence has had a big impact on their poor run of form.

A senior Chelsea chief even told the player that Conte could be axed before the end of the season.

"We're very careful, the profiles are the ones you know about [Conte, Carlo Ancelotti, Roberto Mancini and Claudio Ranieri]", Fabbricini said about potential long-term targets".

"I'm not thinking for one moment about the possibility to go away from this club", he said.

"We struggle to find the solution and to solve the pain in his back".

Conte said: 'In my opinion, you continue to work with a manager or coach not because of what he achieves in one season, but because you trust in him.

Asked if the club needs to compete for trophies in order to retain its star names, the former Italy coach replied: "I think every team tries to keep their best players".

"You know Barcelona have a guy who is not from this world considering the way he plays on the pitch".

Perhaps the real question is whether the Chelsea manager wants to hold on to his job as the Blues prepare for another Monday night game against West Brom.

Conte, who has overseen two wins in 10 matches this year, has reaffirmed his commitment to Chelsea as he seeks to inspire a revival, with the club just as reluctant to instigate a change in the dugout mid-season.

Conte hopes to stop the rot when his team host bottom club West Brom on Monday.

"At the moment we are having a poor result".

"We have to trust in our football".

"To arrive in this league and adapt yourself very quickly is not simple but my task is to try to help him and every single player improve". Otherwise, from the first game we lost against Burnley, this could have happened. Against Bournemouth we created chances to score but we weren't so clinical and we paid a lot. Against Watford it was different because the performance was negative from the start.

He still believes he has the backing of the dressing room, and added: "I don't think talking about my future can affect the players".

The odd thing about Chelsea's plight is that it has been mostly self-inflicted.

Elsewhere, Marcos Alonso will also be handed a late fitness test after missing the Watford game with a muscle injury while Ross Barkley is expected to miss out once again with a hamstring injury.
