The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention acting Director Dr. Anne Schuchat said the center has seen "increased influenza-like activity, more hospitalizations and tragically, more flu-associated deaths in children and adults".

No pediatric deaths have been reported in Iowa this season, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have reported 63 deaths of those 17 years old and younger nationwide this year. UnityPoint Health - Trinity says it has seen a decrease in the number of patients testing positive for influenza A, but the number of patients testing positive for influenza B has been increasing.

"As flu diagnoses and hospitalizations continue to increase to epidemic proportions, this administration is doing everything in its power to protect New Yorkers from this especially durable strain of influenza", Cuomo said. Some doctors say this is the worst flu season they've seen in decades.

Although the current rates do not mean we're having a pandemic, she said, this is "a signal of how very intense this season has been". Roughly one in seven visits to the doctor last week were due to symptoms traditionally connected to the flu. Low-grade fever, headache and muscle aches also may occur.

However, the same study found that the vaccine was 55 per cent effective in preventing cases of the influenza B strain.

But Schuchat emphasized that "some protection is better than none" and said it is not too late to get a flu shot if you still have not gotten one.

County officials said the final week of 2017 had the highest proportion of emergency room visits for patients with flu-like symptoms with fever at 9.7 percent of all patients.

This season has also seen the highest flu hospitalization rate since 2010, according to a KSDK report. That ties the highest level seen in the U.S. during swine flu in 2009.

Julie Kalbfleisch, a spokesperson for Waterloo Region Public Health said "no paediatric deaths related to flu have been reported to us". You can catch a different active strain.

"There is some antiviral medication that can shorten the severity of the flu, but they have to be taken within a couple of days after you start showing symptoms", he said.

The department gets weekly updates from the state's Bureau of Vital Records and Health Statistics, but the time of the deaths might not coincide with reporting periods.

This flu season is the worst in almost a decade and it's not getting better, according to the newest report from the CDC.
