Blizzard releases surprise patch for 2002's Warcraft III

Warcraft 3 gets an update and tournament, and those remaster rumors are sure looking more likely

Blizzard has since spoken out about one of these two recent stories, and as much as Switch owners would love for them to have acknowledged the Diablo III rumor, they instead opted to explain the Warcraft III invitations.

Surprise! Warcraft III, the vintage PC strategy game of 16 years, has been given an unexpected update from its developers Blizzard.

Granted, this is only between the lines, but following a warm reception to the StarCraft remaster, a polished up take on Warcraft 3 hardly seems implausible.

The update is now live on the game's public test realm includes balance changes to numerous heroes, 24-player lobbies and widescreen support. There's also updates to the team colors in what's described as an "ongoing effort" and changes to the world editor. The Warcraft III Invitational is set to take place 27 and 28 February; and will debut a new major patch for the game. "Well-known Warcraft III competitors from around the world will be getting together live at Blizzard HQ to showcase their talents in friendly competition!"

One interesting entry on the patch notes also is that this update will be the "last version to support Windows XP" suggesting bigger changes to come in the future.

Rumours of a remaster for both Warcraft 3 and Diablo 2 were sparked past year after a couple of Blizzard job listings hinted at overhauls for the two titles. It seems that nearly every hero in the game has received a series of buffs, nerfs, and minor alterations created to bring balance to the almost 16-year-old RTS classic.
