The Met Office said the cold spell could last well into next week with even colder air from Russian Federation moving across the United Kingdom and while there's a low risk of snow this week that could all change after the weekend.

Phil Garner, forecaster at Weatherquest, said the weather front had picked up its dramatic moniker as it is made up of cold air from Siberia which has made its way across eastern Europe.

She said: "There is increasing confidence that easterly winds will develop, dragging in very cold air from Siberia as early as next week". Across Europe as a whole, this will be one of the coldest outbreaks of the last decade, potentially setting records for the coldest air seen so late in the season.

Public Health England's Dr Thomas Waite said: "Cold temperatures, indoors and out, pose real health risks to many and every winter we know that thousands of people get ill and even die following exposure to cold conditions".

First, it's related to a recent sudden stratospheric warming event and subsequent split in the polar vortex. The lowest temperature that month was -12.9C (9F).

The Met Office said while the week had started milder, with temperatures as high as 14C in some parts of the United Kingdom, conditions would be short-lived with with cold air set to flow in from Eastern Europe over the weekend.

Chief Meteorologist Andy Page, said: "High pressure will become established across the United Kingdom by the middle of this week bringing settled weather for most, but also some frosty nights". This sunshine could be prolonged at times, especially towards the south coast.

"Highs on Saturday will be 4-5C (39-41F), on Sunday the highest temperatures will be 3C (37F)". These will become increasingly prolonged, with another widespread sharp frost expected.

Tomorrow will be dry, largely sunny, but also very cold. It will feel bitterly cold and a severe ground frost is expected.

At the moment forecasters are saying that temperatures will remain very cold into Tuesday, February 27. This will lead to a raw feel to the day.

Wednesday will see some more snow showers.
