BC pours a little extra to defend local wineries after Alberta boycott

GUEST COLUMN: Constitutionality is key in Trans Mountain fight, and BC is on the wrong side

Do not forget to update your bookmarks. I have had discussions with the premier of Alberta and have made it clear to both of them that the interests of British Columbia are my responsibility.

The dispute started after BC announced further shipments of bitumen from Alberta would be limited and that's considered a direct threat to the expansion of the Kinder Morgan's pipeline which ends in Burnaby.

"Our consultation on proposed new regulations hasn't even begun, but Alberta has seen fit to take measures to impact B.C. businesses", continued the B.C. premier.

The B.C. Wine Institute responded to Premier Notley's announcement with an open letter to its members, calling the boycott, "disturbing".

In a press conference Wednesday B.C. Premier John Horgan said he will not retaliate against Alberta's ban, and added his government would not back down from its fight to nix the $7.4-billion pipeline project.

Lindsay Meredith, marketing professor at Simon Fraser University, said "anyone worth their salt" in wine marketing will capitalize on the publicity.

"I want to resolve this, but I'm not going to be distracted".

"The Premier in B.C.is making it sound like this is a normal course, insignificant path that he is treading down, but we all know where it ends, and it ends in attempts to continue to frustrate and delay us, and we are not going to stand for that", Anderson said. "They didn't really have anything to do with this conflict".

Early on in the campaign, Guyon posted a meme on social media that outlined her challenge. Most prominent was Green Party leaders - and B.C. NDP kingmaker - Andrew Weaver who bought three bottles of red, certified local by the B.C. Vintners Quality Alliance (VQA). "Picked up three bottles of fantastic BC VQA ..."

Jake Ootes, owner of Celista Estate Winery in the North Shuswap, pins the blame for the trade dispute on the B.C. government.

"This is one good step to waking B.C. up to the fact that they can't attack our industry without a response from us", Notley said Tuesday following a meeting with her cabinet.

"Here's to a future ... where jurisdictions don't take petty shots at their neighbours because their neighbours are listening to the voices of Indigenous Nations and communities and standing up". He said at least one customer who regularly bought B.C. wine asked for an alternative recommendation in light of the boycott.

Wednesday saw Quebeckers hold a "mass purchase in solidarty to stop Kinder Morgan" at an SAQ public liquor store in Montreal. Notley also suspended talks to buy B.C. electricity.

The Institute's president and CEO Miles Prodan said he was "disappointed" with boycotting wineries "over a yet-to-be-determined British Columbia government policy in a different sector".

The Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission will not import in any wines from the west.

A recent decision by the Alberta government to ban the import of B.C. wine into the province has left a number of Alberta restaurants, retail shops and import agents disappointed.

"What we're doing is reducing the ability for consumers to enjoy a product that they were previously enjoying", said economist Ross Hickey, a professor at UBC Okanagan.
