At least 19 dead after bus topples over in Hong Kong

Nineteen people were killed on Saturday when a double decker bus overturned in Hong Kong, police said.

At least 17 men and two women were among those killed, the spokeswoman said.

"We feel deeply saddened by the accident and offer our condolences to the deceased", government leader Carrie Lam said after paying a visit to the injured at a hospital.

She told reporters that an independent investigation led by a judge would be carried out to establish what caused the crash.

Local TV channels broadcast footage of rescue workers cutting open the roof of the bus, operated by the Kowloon Motor Bus Co., and bodies of dead passengers laid out on the ground, covered in white sheets.

Hong Kong's public transport is usually safe, and deadly accidents of this scale are relatively infrequent.

The city's worst road traffic accident occurred in 2003 when a double-decker bus collided with a truck and plunged from a bridge, killing 21 people.

Earlier, 13 deaths and 40 cases of injuries were reported after a bus turned over in Tai Po Road at 18:00 local time (10:00 GMT).

The safety of Hong Kong's waterways came under scrutiny after 39 people were killed when a high-speed ferry and a pleasure boat crashed in 2012.
