ANC Chiefs To Meet To 'Finalise' Zuma Exit

Mr Zuma has been on borrowed time since his deputy, Cyril Ramaphosa, took over as leader of the African National Congress (ANC) in December.

According to a notice circulating on social media, the ANC has scheduled a special national executive committee (NEC) for today at Saint George Hotel in Irene, Centurion, but it was unclear if the agenda for the meeting was to discuss Zuma's future.

Cyril Ramaphosa, who was ANC secretary-general at the time, stands next to President Nelson Mandela as he holds up a copy of the new South African Constitution at its signing in 1996.

The political opposition has criticised the private talks between Ramaphosa and Zuma, saying the president may have been pressing for immunity from prosecution in exchange for his resignation.

Zuma has clung to power after rejecting a request by his party's senior officials to resign a week ago. The meeting begins around 4:00 p.m. Magashule eventually leaves, and Zuma and Ramaphosa meet alone.

The rand had strengthened shortly before midday on Monday, as global risk appetite returned, and all eyes remained fixed on Jacob Zuma's exit from the presidency.

Scandals linked to Zuma have played a major role in sapping support for the ruling party, which has led South Africa since the end of white minority rule in 1994.

Ahead of the meeting Zuma's supporters were gearing up to wage one last battle to save his political life after the embattled leader suffered another setback yesterday.

Ramaphosa also took the opportunity to stress the ANC's unity.

It was believed Mr. Zuma would have replaced Mr. Ramaphosa with his ex-wife, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, who incidentally challenged the deputy president for the party leader post.

The stalemate over Zuma leaving office has left South Africa in limbo, with a series of public events cancelled last week including Thursday's State of the Nation address to parliament in Cape Town.

Zuma denied it, but only a day before he had been summoned by Zulu King Goodwill Zwelethini in Zuma's heartland of KwaZulu-Natal.

Once Zuma is out, the book is likely to be thrown at him over the many charges of corruption levelled at him.

ANC Gauteng spokesperson Motalatale Modiba said the provincial ANC reiterated its stance that the ANC NEC was able to resolve "the current leadership issue decisively in a manner that demonstrates that the ANC has put the interest of South Africa first".

An NEC member who is also an MP said most members in the structure were prepared to back Zuma's removal.
