Aldi has been crowned the UK's favourite supermarket according to Which? – but it's bad news for the big four

Aldi and Lidl have won over their customers with value for money, knocking Waitrose off the top spot.

The annual Which? customer satisfaction survey found that shoppers were impressed by the German store's "fantastic prices", awarding it a five-star rating for value for money.

The move sees Waitrose knocked from the top spot, which it has held for three years, dropping to fourth position.

While Aldi has been crowned best in-store supermarket, Iceland.co.uk came top in the online supermarkets survey for the third consecutive year - though this time it shares the number one position with Ocado.

In recent years Tesco and its "big four" peers, Sainsbury's, Asda and Morrisons, have been working to lower the price differential to LADs in their stores, leading to more than three years of nearly continuous food price deflation in the country until last year. It is the second time...

Supermarkets were ranked in the in-store category based on consumers' feelings about the appearance of stores, queuing time, staff availability, the range and quality of products and value for money.

The news comes as Tesco continues to feel pressure from Aldi and Lidl, with the latest Kantar data showing earlier this month that the blue-chip's grocer market share had continued to decline in the 12 weeks to January 28, having dipped 0.3 percentage points to 27.8 percent.

Sainsbury's ended up in last place out of nine, with shoppers unimpressed by the grocery giant's special offers.

"With food costs rising it seems as though shoppers have felt the pinch and are voting with their feet and wallets", said Alex Neill, managing director of Which? home products and services.

Morrisons.com and Waitrose.com came joint third, and the fifth spot taken by Amazon Fresh which rolled out its service to an additional 42 United Kingdom postcodes a year ago but is not yet available nationwide.

Iceland received five stars for its driver's service and the availability of delivery slots - with three quarters of shoppers saying their most recent order was delivered on time.

Amazon Fresh was included in the online survey for the first time ever, securing fifth spot.

She added: "The Big Four supermarkets need to up their game or risk losing their customers to other supermarkets who are doing a better job of giving people what they want".
