After initially showing some hesitation, Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall has joined other states in filing suit against Purdue Pharma, L.P., which manufactured one of the first and most widely-abused prescription opiates, OxyContin.

"The lies that they were told and trained in over the years whether it be that there was no dosage too high of an opioid. or even this concept of a pseudo-addiction that if somebody appeared in an office demonstrating signs of addiction that just meant that they needed more pain medication", he says.

"The opioid epidemic has devastated Alabama families, leaving a trail of addiction and death winding though every community of this state", said Marshall.

Marshall's complaint on behalf of the citizens of Alabama contends that Purdue violated the state's Deceptive Trade Practices Act in the marketing and sale of opioid drugs and, in so doing, jeopardized public health and welfare, as well as the safety of Alabama residents.

A federal judge in OH overseeing more than 200 lawsuits by cities, counties and others over the opioid epidemic recently reached out to some state attorneys general about meeting as he pushes for a quick settlement of the litigation. "It's not just a law enforcement problem".

Marshall said he anticipates the lawsuit will eventually be transferred to OH where multi-district litigation is ongoing.

Marshall was among the attorneys general who last Wednesday attended the first court-ordered settlement conference overseen US District Judge Dan Polster in Cleveland.

At least 30,000 Alabama residents over age 17 are dependent on heroin or prescription painkillers, according to a statement issued by the attorney general's office.

A group of state attorneys general have been conducting a multistate investigation into whether companies that manufacture and distribute prescription opioids engaged in unlawful practices. "We vigorously deny these allegations and look forward to the opportunity to present our defense".

The is seeking monetary damages and injunctive relief against Purdue.

He said the company has distributed the guideline for prescribing opioids for chronic pain of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "As a company grounded in science, we must balance patient access to FDA-approved medicines, while working collaboratively to solve this public health challenge", Puskar said in a statement.
