United Tech Falls On New Geared Turbofan Problems; Rival GE Jumps

The agency ordered flight restrictions on planes powered by those engines: jets using two affected engines were ordered to stop flying them within three flight cycles; aircraft with one affected engine are restricted from certain extended-range flights.

Budget airline IndiGo today said deliveries of A320 neo aircraft that are powered by Pratt & Whitney engines have been put on hold by Airbus and the engine maker.

This is the second occasion when the airline has been forced to ground planes on account of P&W engine problems.

The issue is the latest in a string of problems that have bedeviled the GTF program.

EASA on February 9 issued an emergency airworthiness directive (EAD), warning of a potential "dual engine" inflight shutdown on A320neo-family aircraft powered by Pratt & Whitney PW1100G geared turbofan (GTF) engines.

"Our precautionary measure of grounding the three aircraft resulted in cancellations of some of our flights", it said. "IndiGo has only three such affected aircraft", the official said on Saturday.

According to the filing, IndiGo would continue to add A320 ceo and ATR aircraft to its fleet.

As many as 11 of the 113 delivered Pratt-powered aircraft had been grounded, said informed source, with 43 in-service engines affected in total, all from the most recent batches to come off the engine maker's production line.

The A320neo is a revised version of the A319, A320, and A321 twin-engine aircraft with a "new engine option" (either the CFM International LEAP-1A or the Pratt & Whitney PW1100G), and large wing tips that help to reduce the jets' fuel consumption.

Pratt & Whitney said the problem, related "to the knife edge seal in the High Pressure Compressor aft hub", affects "a limited subpopulation" of its PW1100G-JM engines, but gave no details.
