"Our government today, with the propping [up] of our baby-in-chief-the "Jerkoff-in-chief" I call him-has put the press under siege, ridiculing it through trying to discredit it through outrageous attacks and lies".

De Niro was addressing an audience at the National Board of Review Annual Awards Gala in New York City, and he made a decision to go off script and talk about the president.

Robert De Niro's introduction of best actress victor Meryl Streep at Tuesday's National Board of Review awards gala went a little sideways as the topic of President Donald Trump came up.

"Meryl is the most generous and giving actor", said De Niro, who starred in the 1984 film Falling in Love with the 68-year-old actress.

He said: "Again, just like 1971, the press is distinguishing itself with fearless, exacting journalism".

The movie gave us glimpses of President Nixon as delusional, narcissistic, petty, vindictive, nasty and bats*** f***ing insane. It tells the story of the Washington Post's reporting on the Pentagon Papers and has drawn parallels between President Richard Nixon and Trump-era politics. He then quipped, "Ah, the good old days".

It wasn't the first time that De Niro has gone off script and launched into a profane tirade against Trump. Robert De Niro, for instance, has repeatedly criticized the "bullsh*t artist" president, whose victory in 2016 he compared to 9/11.

It was fascinating to watch The Post.

"Not even if the volleyball was a stable genius", Robert said referring to Meryl's costar Tom Hanks' movie Castaway - and President Trump's insane tweet. He's also said that Trump "sullied the presidency", and that America under Trump has become a "tragic dumbass comedy".

Actor Robert De Niro laughs as he arrives to receive his Chaplin Award from the Film Society of Lincoln Center in the Manhattan borough of NY, U.S. May 8, 2017. "I am still fighting for Meryl to be able to get 79 cents of what a man would get" to play a similar role.
