Rep. Ron DeSantis enters Florida governor's race

- Republican Congressman Ron DeSantis is entering Florida's gubernatorial race.

DeSantis announced on Fox News Friday morning that he plans to file paperwork to begin the process of running for governor.

DeSantis was first elected in 2012 to Florida's District 6 US congressional seat, which includes all of Flagler County and parts of Volusia and Sumter counties, in 2012.

An official campaign kick-off will occur later this month, a release from his campaign said.

DeSantis, who is 39, proposed a time limit last August on funding for special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian meddling and potential collusion with Trump campaign associates during the 2016 election.

He ran for U.S. Senate in 2016 in Florida until incumbent Senator Marco Rubio announced he would seek re-election following his failed presidential bid.

The Palm Coast Republican has made several appearances on Fox News, and on December 22, Trump apparently took notice, tweeting that DeSantis was a "brilliant young leader" who would "make a GREAT Governor of Florida".

The tweet followed an appearance by DeSantis on Fox News, which aired on Air Force One while Trump was flying to West Palm Beach. "He loves our Country and is a true FIGHTER!" the tweet read.

Last week, DeSantis rolled out a pair of financial teams - state and national - that included Las Vegas casino mogul Sheldon Adelson, Republican mega-donor Rebekah Mercer and Home Depot co-founder Bernie Marcus.

DeSantis has represented Florida's 6th District in Congress since 2013 but widely flew under the radar until recent months when political insiders began speculating he would make a bid for governor.

DeSantis joins Commissioner of Agriculture Adam Putnam as the second prominent Republican candidate in the race to succeed Gov. Rick Scott, who is term limited. Jack Latvala in the race for the Republican nomination.
