Poll finds Oprah can beat Trump

"I know her very well", Trump told reporters following a bipartisan gathering of congressional leaders in the White House cabinet room.

Media mogul Oprah Winfrey's rousing speech on race and gender at the Golden Globes Awards ceremony on Monday has led to rampant speculation and calls for her to consider a presidential bid in the United States in 2020.

"The Daily Show" host Trevor Noah said that Winfrey would be the "perfect opponent" for Trump as "she's everything that he's not".

"Um... Ivanka... you do know Oprah was criticizing your dad, right?" another wrote.

However, when asked directly whether she has any plans to campaign for the top job yesterday, Oprah responded: "I don't - I don't", Bloomberg reports.

In her speech, Winfrey told the story of Abbeville, Ala. -native Recy Taylor, a black civil rights activist who died late last month just days before her 98th birthday.

Making a plea for a free press, Winfrey said, "I want to say I value the press more than ever before as we try to navigate these complicated times".

On Tuesday, King suggested that her best friend's viewpoint remained unchanged.

Actor Alyssa Milano directed Ivanka to the Time's Up legal fund that will help her father's accusers with their expenses. "It would be a pretty good ticket".

Trump himself had not said anything about the speech, and his staff were not sure if he watched.

"I'll beat Oprah", the president declared flatly at a White House meeting Tuesday - though he quickly added, "I don't think she's going to run".

While he supports the idea of Winfrey running, it would also punctuate how Trump's candidacy has altered political norms.

Reese Witherspoon, Winfrey's co-star in "A Wrinkle In Time", introduced Winfrey and said her hugs could end all wars. "Is she a successful individual?" Absolutely. But in terms of where she stands on a number of positions, I would find a lot of problems with that.

The news comes after Winfrey was widely praised for her speech on gender equality to the 75th Golden Globe awards. Much of the excitement has been contained to liberal circles, of course - even as people close to Oprah say she would never do it. And the "Oprah for president?" possibility was a top story on morning TV. "And if I did decide to do it, I would say I'd have a hell of a chance of winning". "I think it was a homerun on many levels".
