Passengers safe after Turkish plane goes off runway metres away from sea

There were 168 people on board the Pegasus plane which was landing at Trabzon airport

An airplane on January 14 has skidded off the runway after landing in the Black Sea province of Trabzon, causing panic among passengers aboard, Hurriyet Daily News reported citing Anadolu Agency. It lost control after landing and stuck in mud just meters away from the sea, with its head very close to the water.

Panic spread through the Boeing 737-800 as it stopped at the edge of the Black Sea - with its nose dangling precariously off a cliff edge.

Everyone on board was evacuated safely, provincial governor Yucel Yavuz said.

The airport, situated in the Turkish province of the same name, was closed for several hours afterwards but has since reopened. "There was panic; people shouting, screaming", one of the passengers, Fatma Gordu, told state-run news agency Anadolu.

"We tilted to the side".

The airport was temporarily shut down until Sunday morning as firefighters cooled down the plane and authorities investigated the accident, whose cause remains unclear.
